Prostate Cancer Treatment

What should you know about prostate cancer treatment?  Prostate cancer is a disease that develops in a man's prostate, which is a gland in the male reproductive system.  The problem occurs when cells of the prostate mutate start to multiply to an unhealthy degree.  The cells spread from the prostate into other surrounding parts of the man's body, such as the lymph nodes or even the bones.  Symptoms may include pain, difficulty urinating and sexual dysfunction.  However, these are symptoms that will be noticed in advanced stages of the disease; most doctors will push for earlier detection.

What methods of prostate cancer treatment are available?  Primary treatment options exist in the way of surgery and radiation therapy.  There are some other treatment options, such as hormonal therapy, chemotherapy, cryosurgery, high-intensity focused ultrasound or proton therapy, though their success rate largely depends on the individual and the doctor's opinion.  The doctor will attempt to discern the condition of the patient before recommending specific prostate cancer treatment.  He or she will take into consideration the age and health of the patient as well as the spread of the disease.

The response of the cancer to initial treatment will be indicative of how successful the entire treatment will be.  Of course, all prostate cancer treatment has the potential to cause side effects.  Common side effects include erectile dysfunction and urinary incontinence.  Therefore, the doctor must also consider the quality of life that the patient can expect to return to, before recommending treatment.  Discussions between doctor and patient will involve balancing the benefits of therapy and with the risk of side effects or lifestyle changes.

The doctor will also take into consideration if the cancer has spread beyond the prostate.  If this is the case, then treatment options could change considerably.  The doctor then has to then try to predict the probability of spread.  Usually, treatment like HIFU, radiation therapy, cryosurgery, and surgery are recommended for patients with cancer contained in the prostate.  For patients who have a spreading cancer, the best treatment may be hormonal therapy and chemotherapy.  This isn't a hard rule however; some doctors have used radiation therapy in advanced tumor treatment and even some hormonal therapy for early stage tumors.  It depends upon the doctor's opinion and the circumstances surrounding the cancer.
